I seem to have forgotten my password, though I could swear I'm entering it correctly. One moment I was using the photos application, and the next it says I have to log in again, but I can't. I'm still logged in here, obviously, but not on localhost. I think I was trying to share a collection with someone at the time this happened. I'm using Firefox on an Intel iMac.

On a related note, do I have to be logged in locally for my computer to share with friends who visit?

Hello :

Thank you for trying out Dekoh Photos application.

You could request for password to be reset by clicking the Forgot
password link here :

No you don't have to be logged in. But the computer on which you shared
photos has to remain connected to the Internet for your friends to see
the pictures shared to them.

Please feel free to post back if you still have problems logging into localhost.

Okay, it seems to have been reset, but this leads me to a quandary. Shouldn't we have access to the application on our computer without having to log in? It makes sense to log in to your website, but when my browser is on the same ip address, that security doesn't seem necessary. I suppose it could be a different user logged into the same machine. Still, if I can go into the application and rearrange its code as I please (which another user could not do because Dekoh is in my home directory), what sense does it make?

Hello :

Dekoh desktop is designed to work in environments where a family shares
a single desktop. Each user in the family can have their own buddy list
and share photos etc with their own buddy network.

The login to Dekoh desktop is needed only to enable management of
multiple identities: When I share with my friends, the notifications
they get should have my name and not my wife's name.

Sharing on Dekoh is an operation which requires authentication; you
don't want others to be able to share using your Dekoh id. In the
current version of the applications, we are validating the
username/password right upfront, when the user accesses Dekoh desktop.

Are you suggesting that we could just let users choose the profile they
want in the beginning (remove password dialog there) and ask for the
password when the user wants to share?

Also note that one user can have multiple desktops; I could install
Dekoh on my home PC and at office using the same Dekoh id.

Hope this clarification helps you.

We would love to hear more such feedback on Dekoh desktop and Photos application.
How did the experience compare with that of similar tools you may already be using?
Please also share with us if you wished Dekoh had some more features that could help users.

Thank you.

I would think it would make sense not to require login if there is only one account installed. Most OS X systems would have different system accounts for different users, so that should provide the information of who is using Dekoh. It would be odd for multiple people to use the same system account for accessing Dekoh, especially since switching back and forth between system accounts is so easy.

Since you install in the home directory, each person's home directory will have their own Dekoh. My Aunt uses my machine, but she can't get at any of my files.

Also, authentication for sharing may not be necessary more than once from one machine. It's like the checkbox you see on many login pages that says "keep me logged in from this computer". Of course you'd have to authenticate again from your office, and from there you may not want to stay logged in if someone else has access to your computer.

As for the photo application I enjoy the interface a lot but there are needs. When I create a new collection it requires me to choose a picture from the file system. This is awkward because my pictures come off of the camera with generic numbers, and your file chooser does not include a preview.

This could be fixed by allowing me to create an empty collection and move over pictures from other collections. Also, I would like to be able to move collections.

Currently I'm using Gallery 2, and I appreciate it, but it's less than ideal. I like being able to have all my photos on my home computer the way Dekoh does it. Uploading is awkward, and I usually have to do resizing first, and while it's open I usually adjust the colors, etceteras. While it means I'll have a polished gallery online, I have too many photos and too little time to keep up with it.

Editing the captions for the photos in Dekoh is also awkward. I have to click two or three times before I can type. All things considered I am very pleased with the photos application. I like the clipboard concept for moving things around, and the overall look and feel is nice. I plan on using it more. One last nitpick: when I have one-click photo selection activated, it deactivates when I flip to the next page of photos. It took me a few mistakes to remember to reactivate it each time I flip the page.

I hope all this is helpful. You can message me if you want more specific feedback.

traviswellman,

Thanks for your feedback. All are very good points. I understand where you are coming from with respect to login. On OSX and unix systems you are right, users will have seperate Dekoh installs. On windows however, it installs in C:\Dekoh and it is a shared installation for all windows users. So login was provided to seperate out address book, comments, shares...BTW, if you check the "Remember me", you shouldnt see the login screen on the local desktop.

Please keep sending us the feedback, we will fix problems you mention in the photos app soon.

Thanks,
Vijay
